Indicating that you own something

Mobirise

this is my puppet, the puppet is mine

To own something

In Dutch, expressing ownership can be done in two primary ways. We illustrate this by means of an example. You can say:

1. this bike is mine
or
2. this is my bike

Now we give the complete series:

this is my bike or this bike is mine
this is your bike or this bike is yours
this is his bike or this bike is his
this is her bike of this bike is hers

this is our bike or this bike is ours
this is your bike or this bike is yours
this is their bike or this bike is theirs

The is presented in the following scheme:

Two ways of telling the same story

People who focus on grammar know that there are special names to indicate these specific constructions. For us this is less important. The only thing that matters is that you know the two ways and that you know the words that belong to these constructions.

Now some examples.
