Conversations (basic training)
We have now been in the Netherlands for six months, and even when we sit at the table as a family, we sometimes try to communicate in Dutch. What we notice is that the children pick up the language quickly, while Anna and I have to make much more effort.
The children learn the language quickly because they come into contact with Dutch every day at school and while playing with friends. They are less afraid of making mistakes and therefore dare to practice more. Additionally, their brains are particularly adept at learning new languages at a young age.
Anna and I struggle more because we are less often in situations where we have to use the language. We also tend to withdraw more quickly when we don’t understand something well or when we make mistakes
To improve your conversation skills, we have developed two methods. Each of these methods involves learning small sentences by heart.
Method 1
The first method uses Flashcards. This method has the advantage of requiring you to first think about how the sentence should be in Dutch, so you don’t see the answer right away.
Method 2
The second method uses our Double Language Blocks (DLB). Here, you can see both the Dutch sentence and its pronunciation. The advantage of DLBs is that you can better understand how a question is followed by an answer. Essentially, they involve mini-conversations that are also easy to remember.
