Irregular verbs
I want ...
Irregular verbs are verbs that don't follow a particular rule. This means that they don't have a consistent pattern, like adding "a certain prescribed part" for the past tense, that applies to all verbs. The next illustrations present some of the most used Dutch irregular verbs.
1 to be , to have , to want
2 to do , to go , to come , to see
3 to get , to give , to take
<<<
1 to stand , to sit , to walk
2 to speak , to drink , to eat
<<<
Although these irregular verbs do not follow standard rules, some patterns can still be observed. Let's take a closer look at one of these verbs. In this case, we will examine the verb 'to go.' The illustration will show the conjugation of this verb
First of all, we see that the form with I is always unique. Then we see that the form with you, he, she, and you (polite) remains the same. The form with a plural is always the same as the verb itself. In the past time, we only see a difference between the singular and the plural form. Before we will give another presentation we show some examples of sentences with the verb "to go".
1 I go to the mountains
2 we go with the car
3 are you going with a bike?
<<<
We now understand tfor a part he patterns: the form with 'I' (ik) is always unique. Then, we observe that the form with 'you' (singular informal), 'he' (hij), 'she' (zij), and 'you' (singular formal) remains the same. The form for the plural subjects is always the same as the base form of the verb. In the past tense, we only see a difference between the singular and plural forms. This consistency simplifies the presentation of these verbs in tables. The following tables will present the most used irregular verbs in Dutch, all of which are essential to learn.
